BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Collaboration between the Bellingham Police Department (BPD) and Fred Meyer led to 23 arrests during two retail theft emphasis patrols earlier this month.
The BPD stated that the Fred Meyer location on West Bakerview Road has been “significantly impacted by theft.” Patrols on Dec. 5 and Dec. 10 targeted shoplifting and theft, with most arrests stemming from observed incidents. Some suspects faced additional, more serious charges.
Among the recovered items were 63 grams of methamphetamine and a realistic-looking airsoft pistol. Charges ranged from theft and shoplifting to possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, felony warrants, and violations of domestic violence no-contact orders. One suspect with a Department of Corrections warrant was also taken into custody.
Bellingham isn’t alone in addressing retail theft. Bellevue police reported a 9% rise in shoplifting incidents compared to 2023. Retail theft now accounts for 37% of crimes in the city, making it the most common offense. To combat this, Bellevue police launched the “Stop The Lift” campaign in late 2024.
In one example, suspects linked to thefts at Lululemon locations in Bellevue caused $500,000 in losses, underscoring the broader impact of retail crime as the holiday season continues.
