The City of Tacoma and Metro Parks Tacoma have issued two important public advisories, impacting both waterfront access and glass recycling services. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about these updates to ensure safety and sustainability efforts across Tacoma.
Engineers recently discovered that a portion of the timber bulkhead—a seawall separating the shoreline from pedestrian pathways—has partially failed. High tides and crashing waves have undermined the soil and gravel, destabilizing the sidewalk.
Repair Work Details:
- Construction Team: Key Peninsula Construction
- Timeline: Repairs are expected to take several months to complete.
- Access to Anthony’s Restaurant: The restaurant will remain open during the repair process. Patrons can use a temporary alternative entrance accessible via the Boathouse area, with a convenient drop-off zone nearby.
The damaged bulkhead was first identified in April, prompting an emergency declaration to expedite assessments and permitting. The sidewalk has been cordoned off with cones and signage to ensure public safety. A full closure of the affected area will remain in place until repairs are complete.

Tacoma Glass Recycling Resumes: Drop-Off Locations Now Open
The City of Tacoma’s Environmental Services Department has officially resumed its glass recycling program, effective immediately. Residents can now recycle glass at any of the five designated drop-off locations or the Recycle Center at Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center (3510 S. Mullen St.).
Key Details About the Glass Recycling Program:
- Tacoma has partnered with Glass to Glass in Portland to ensure that recycled glass is repurposed into new products.
- The program was temporarily suspended in September 2024 due to disruptions in the international glass market.
- During the pause, glass collected at drop-off sites was sent to landfills while the City sought a sustainable recycling solution.
“Thanks to our dedicated staff, we’ve successfully reinstated a reliable glass recycling option,” said Lewis Griffith, Solid Waste Division Manager. “We encourage residents to confidently participate in Tacoma’s glass recycling efforts.”
Where to Recycle Glass in Tacoma:
- Visit any of the five designated glass drop-off locations.
- Use the Recycle Center at Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center, located at 3510 S. Mullen St.
