The Fred Oldfield Western Heritage & Art Center, an institution dedicated to preserving the rich legacy of Western art and culture, is embarking on a new chapter. After 22 years at the Washington State Fairgrounds, the Center is relocating to a temporary space at Christ Episcopal Church in Puyallup, Washington, while searching for a permanent home.
A New Era for the Fred Oldfield Center
Renowned for its dedication to fostering creativity and preserving the Western heritage of legendary artist Fred Oldfield, the Center is expanding its reach. The new temporary location at 422 W. Meeker will host art classes and programs for students of all ages, ensuring a seamless transition as the Center seeks a larger facility to house its classrooms and museum collections.
Continuing the Legacy of Fred Oldfield
Fred Oldfield (1918–2017) was an iconic painter of the American West, celebrated for his vibrant use of color and evocative depictions of life on the Yakama Indian Reservation. His passion for art and community lives on through the Center’s programs, which aim to inspire future generations by teaching art and history with a focus on community values.
The Center’s founder, Joella Oldfield, emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum during the move:
“Years ago, we had 10 kids a week, and now we have 150. We couldn’t risk losing that progress, even temporarily.”
Art Classes for All Ages and Abilities
The Fred Oldfield Center offers an extensive array of art and performance classes tailored to students of diverse backgrounds and abilities, including:
- Weekly art and performance classes for kids and adults
- Summer art camps and workshops
- K-12 art programs and homeschool classes
- Dance classes for kids and adults
Supporting the Community and Special Needs Students
The Center is a haven for students from all walks of life, including those with special needs, autism, and non-verbal challenges. Parents have witnessed firsthand how the power of art transforms lives, boosting confidence and academic performance.
Preserving History Through Art and Education
In addition to teaching art, the Center incorporates lessons on community values, like helping neighbors in need, inspired by historical practices such as barn-raising. These teachings resonate deeply with students, emphasizing compassion and collaboration in modern contexts.
Upcoming Events and Programs
The Fred Oldfield Western Heritage & Art Center hosts several signature events throughout the year:
- Fred’s Birthday Fundraiser (March): Celebrate Fred’s legacy while supporting the Center.
- Spring Fair (April): A showcase of art and community spirit.

A Vision for the Future
As the Center moves forward, its extensive collection, including Fred Oldfield’s paintings and Native American artifacts, is being carefully stored. Joella Oldfield and her family are determined to find a new, permanent home within 10 miles of the Fairgrounds to continue their mission.
“We believe the community will rally around us. We’re confident someone will help us find the right space to continue inspiring generations,” said Joella.
