Metro Parks Tacoma, a cornerstone of the community since 1907, is undergoing a significant leadership transformation. With the passing of a historic commissioner and the retirement of another long-serving member, the board is welcoming fresh faces to carry forward its mission.

Honoring Tim Reid: A Legacy of Service

On December 12, 2024, Metro Parks’ longest-serving commissioner, Tim Reid, passed away after 28 years of dedicated service. Reid’s contributions spanned nearly a quarter of the park district’s history, making an indelible mark on Tacoma. His commitment to the community and his role in shaping Metro Parks Tacoma’s future leave a lasting legacy.

The board will soon select applicants to fill Reid’s position. Interviews are scheduled for the week of February 3, with a final decision anticipated on February 10.

Celebrating Aaron Pointer’s Retirement

Commissioner Aaron Pointer retired in December 2024 after 23 years of service. At 82, Pointer decided to focus on his family and personal well-being. A former athletic director for Pierce County Parks and Recreation, Pointer had already devoted 29 years to mentoring youth before joining Metro Parks Tacoma in 2001.

Pointer’s tenure was marked by his advocacy for inclusivity. His efforts led to renaming two Tacoma parks after prominent Black leaders: Jack Tanner Park, honoring the civil rights activist and judge, and Senator Rosa Franklin Park, named after Washington State’s first African American woman senator.

Reflecting on his time, Pointer said, “It truly made a difference to see those parks renamed. It’s been a highlight of my career.” Pointer’s achievements also extend to his baseball career, where he remains a celebrated figure for his record-breaking performances.

Welcoming New Leadership: Alisa Lee

In December 2024, Alisa Lee was unanimously appointed to complete Pointer’s term through 2025. A first-generation Vietnamese American, Lee brings a wealth of community and political experience. As an electoral program manager at Sage Leaders, she has supported underrepresented candidates in public office. Lee also serves on Metro Parks’ Active Lifestyles and Community Wellness Advisory Council and is deeply involved in nonprofit initiatives.

“This feels like the achievement of a lifetime,” Lee shared. “I’m honored to serve Tacoma and look forward to making a meaningful impact.” Lee plans to run for re-election to secure a full six-year term after completing Pointer’s term.

Rosie Ayala’s Departure

Commissioner Rosie Ayala recently vacated her seat after winning a position on the Pierce County Council. The board will review applicants for her replacement in late February, with interviews scheduled for the week of March 3 and a decision expected on March 10.

A New Chapter for Metro Parks Tacoma

As Metro Parks Tacoma transitions into this new era, the board remains committed to fostering community engagement, inclusivity, and growth. With a blend of seasoned experience and fresh perspectives, the leadership team is poised to uphold the district’s legacy while paving the way for future successes.
