MultiCare Opens New State-of-the-Art Physician Training Facility in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — MultiCare Health System has unveiled a cutting-edge clinical and training facility in Tacoma, Washington. This new space will host the Tacoma Family Medicine and OB Access clinics, along with three highly regarded graduate medical education programs: the Tacoma Family Medicine Residency Program, the Rural Family Medicine with Obstetrics Fellowship, and the Omak Rural Training Program.

Expanding Access to Quality Care and Physician Training

For over 45 years, Tacoma Family Medicine has been a cornerstone of compassionate, full-spectrum care for underserved populations. The new 22,000-square-foot, two-story facility, located at 1112 6th Ave. on the MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital campus, is designed to enhance patient care and physician training. The expanded space includes:

  • 32 exam rooms in the family medicine clinic, up from 21 in the previous location.
  • 13 exam rooms in the obstetrics clinic, an increase from eight.

The facility will support 28 residents, six fellows, and their faculty, creating a state-of-the-art learning environment with dedicated clinical and workspaces.

A Commitment to Advancing Medicine

“This building represents our mission to train the next generation of physicians with professionalism and evidence-based medicine,” said David O’Brien, MD, executive vice president and chief physician officer at MultiCare. “Here, we combine science and art to deliver compassionate care, making a difference in our patients’ lives.”

Since 1978, the Tacoma Family Medicine Residency Program has trained over 300 physicians, many of whom practice locally. The Rural Family Medicine with Obstetrics Fellowship, established in 1989, has graduated nearly 150 fellows, demonstrating MultiCare’s long-standing commitment to addressing rural health care needs.

Building a Sustainable Health Care Workforce

Jennifer Knowles, MD, chief academic officer, highlighted the importance of this investment: “This facility provides the best resources for our residents and fellows, empowering them to serve our community. As one of the largest clinical training sites in the Pacific Northwest, MultiCare is dedicated to ensuring a sustainable health care workforce for the future.”
