Washington Housing Grant: A Game-Changer for Affordable Living

Olympia, January 30, 2025 – The Washington Housing Grant will accelerate the construction of more than 1,800 affordable housing units in Washington State. Governor Bob Ferguson and the state Department of Commerce have announced a $14.6 million grant under this important scheme. This funding is provided under the “Connecting Housing to Infrastructure Program” (CHIP), which will help in the development of infrastructure such as water and sewer pipes.

This grant will provide support to several important projects, including affordable housing for seniors and permanent supportive housing for homeless people. Governor Ferguson has described the Washington Housing Grant as a key step to solving the housing crisis and plans to build 1.1 million housing units over the next 20 years. He said, “Washingtonians need more housing. We have to make construction easy, fast and affordable.”

The CHIP program reduces the cost of projects that provide affordable housing to those in need. Why is the Washington Housing Grant needed?

The demand for housing in the state is growing rapidly. It is estimated that 1 million new homes will be needed by 2044, half of which should be for low-income groups. According to reports, more than half of Washingtonians are spending more than 30% of their income on rent.

Who will benefit from the Washington Housing Grant?

The amount received under this grant is between $200,000 and $2.3 million and it will be given to King, Pierce, Spokane, Clark, Whatcom, Cowlitz, Kittitas, Jefferson, Island and Asotin counties.

What will be the future of the Washington Housing Grant?

Governor Ferguson also signed an executive order (25-02) to address the housing crisis, directing all state agencies to review and streamline regulations. Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck also submitted a 42-page report on the issue, making 20 recommendations.

Local officials praised the grant. “This grant will help promote affordable housing in our rural area,” said Greg Brotherton, chairman of the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners.

“This grant will allow us to do more to help poor families,” said John Moon, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Whatcom County.
